World Championships of Systems Architecture and Modeling

Competitors can choose to compete in one of two divisions: 

• Individual 
• Team (up to three people) 

This is a single day modeling competition.  You (or your team) will be provided a copy of the problem statement and system requirements upon arrival at the event.  After a briefing on the problem statement and requirements, the participants for the individual and team competitions will disperse to separate rooms, respectively, where they will work developing their MBSE models and end data products for the duration of the competition.  After the modeling and solution development portion of the competition concludes, each team will have the opportunity to present their solutions to the judges.  Additionally, each team will be able to submit a set of solution artifacts to the judges (see “solution format” under the Rules section) that the judges can then refer to during their final deliberations.  The winning teams will be announced at both the Monday evening Welcome Reception and again at the Tuesday Morning Opening Plenary Session.  Winning teams will be provided with physical trophies and digital accolades that can be promoted via LinkedIn and other online platforms. 

• Any MBSE tool can be used 
• Any modeling language can be used 
• Any modeling methodology can be used 
• You may bring other engineering tools to integrate with your MBSE tool to create a local Digital Engineering Environment.  Examples may include mathematical modeling and analysis tools, requirement management tools, Microsoft Office products, test planning software, etc. Adding this is at the discretion of the team.  
• You are responsible for providing your own computer and are responsible for hosting your own software. 
• You are responsible for ensuring that all engineering software tools used are properly licensed.  
• You may bring previously-developed rule sets (such as model validation rules) that are intended to aid in ensuring model consistency, completeness, and correctness. 
• You may not bring previous models or model library content. The solution must be entirely produced during the event. 
• Wi-Fi access will be provided.  
• You are allowed to use the internet to do additional research during the event. 

Solution Format:  Remember that most consumers of a system architecture data model are neither systems engineers or modelers and, consequently, will not have access to nor will be able to understand a model unaided. While the MBSE model is a necessary intermediate artifact and can be shown to the judges during the presentation phase of the competition, the model itself cannot be submitted to the judges for their final review. Presentations and documents including diagrams, tables, matrices, or reports generated from the model as well as viewpoints of the model generated and made available in a webpage viewable format are all permissible artifacts for final submission to the judges. Your solution packet needs to be viewable and consumable by the judges on their laptop with standard MS Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), PDF, or webpage viewable format (such at HTML).

This is a one-day modeling competition.  The schedule (subject to change) will be posted soon. 

The competition not only assesses your raw modeling skills but also serves as a reflection of the practical constraints and expectations a modeler or modeling team will encounter in industry. The competition evaluates your capacity to create a model and accompanying artifacts that enhance and expedite a more extensive product team’s ability to design, synthesize, integrate, test, and field a system that they and their customers will love. The competition favors solutions that are both elegant and comprehensible to the broader set of stakeholders, over models that are merely aesthetically pleasing. The capacity to convey crucial systems engineering and architectural information to individuals who are not modelers or systems engineers in a way that they can easily comprehend is an essential aspect of the competition. The judges will evaluate each team based on their mastery of tools and modeling methodologies, systems thinking skills, innovation capabilities, creativity, communication skills, and their ability to thrive under pressure. 

Detailed rules and judging criteria will be provided to participants at the beginning of the competition.  

The competition will be judged by a team of three individuals that have experience spanning academia, industry, government, and tool vendor domains.
